This Customer Defies Natural Selection

Me: “Do you have any questions or need any samples?”

Customer: “I do have a question on this tile in here.”

(The customer shows me a natural stone travertine that has a lot of variation through it.)

Customer: “I love the look of this tile. Can I just get this tile pattern on this one tile? I don’t like these other ones.”

Me: “Sir, natural stone varies, so no two tiles will look alike. You will get the same colors generally, but not the exact same pattern. You can see the change in the other tiles next to it. They are actually all the same tile.”

Customer: “You don’t know what you’re talking about. Tile doesn’t vary. You can make it look however you want. I saw it on TV. That ‘how to make stuff’ show.”

Me: “Sir, this is a natural material made by nature. I have no control over what patterns and colors come out of the mountain.”

Customer: “Well, you should talk to your supplier about that. This is just ugly. I hate natural stone.”

    David,

I just discovered this blog and read with great interest the stories of stone and building. Your description of Carrara reminds me of the mostly defunct marble industry in East Tennessee. The "marble" here is really a very tightly cemented limestone that has undergone a lot of diagenetic change and now closely resembles the properties of metamorphic marble.

What many people don't know is that many(most?) of the early federal buildings in DC were constructed of this dimension stone. Once you become aware of its use, you start seeing it in many applications, e.g. stalls in restrooms in Chicago, on the walls of many Post offices around the country etc.

I wonder if you have looked into this stone source and its history?

You seem to have no idea about natural selection.

You have two animals. They are slightly different because of random genetic mutation. As a result, one of them is more likely to survive the events in its life and reproduce than the other one. Therefore, on average, the environment selects one genetic configuration over the other, and given the fecundity of reproduction that genetic configuration comes to dominate. That's natural selection.

The point is, that natural selection imposes some order on the chaos of mutation. The result, after many, many mutations followed by selection, is a new species.

    Hi Sheila,

I to like to use natural material but to get the lace work for the long Print Room Walk piece had to used a poly chiffon supplied to me by my university when i was studying there so unfortunately i don't have the direct source but most haberdasheries should sell it as its quite a standard fabric.

congratulations on your HND! and i love the sound of the tree park hangings too by the way. You'll have to let me know if your showing your work anywhere too and ill try to come and visit.

    Best wishes sarah.

Well ... part of the problem is that there are some religious people who believed that natural selection denied the Bible's account of man's origins. In taking this stance they basically said, to believe in natural selection is to ignore God.

Laws such as the Butler Act were enacted to prevent evolution and natural selection being thought in schools ... Teachers weren't allowed "to teach any theory that denies the story of the Divine Creation of man as taught in the Bible, and to teach instead that man has descended from a lower order of animals".

In taking this stance, the conservative religious side made "natural selection" an atheist argument. Instead of looking at their interpretation of the bible, they stood firm, and just denounced anything that may contradict it.

So anyway, why it is seen to support atheism, is because many right wing religious folks believed, and acted like, it was a threat to religion.

I have found a similar product from an Australian supplier called Stone Age Design their website http://www.stoneagedesign.com.au has some great photos on it of sinks they supply. We are looking at one of the sinks for our bathroom renovation. Would like a natural stone bathtub but they are too heavy to get into the house as it is a renovation on an upstairs bathroom. Just inquiring if anyone has any experience with this type of natural stone sink

If you would like to know of some of the independent and proud people - look no further. Queen Boadicea, the Warrior Queen may be one. William Blake, the Poet and King Oswy of Northumbria might be the other ones.
