There are service providers, based in the US and elsewhere, who provide a personal VPN route to their clients. The VPN offers encrypted traffic between the client's host and the VPN service; ie: your ISP and whomever they let sniff your traffic will get only encrypted data. They also usually have a written privacy policy that they don't keep data logs. The VPN providers bread & butter is the privacy of their clients. If they start letting someone sniff their circuits, once word got out they'd be out of business. And, as I said, there are VPN providers elsewhere than the US where the draconian IP laws don't exist. In addition to encrypted tunnel, the VPN is also helpful in bypassing certain 'features' like geolocation. The VPN provider I use provides circuit homes in 44 countries that can be switched with a drop-down menu and a single click. The majority of people think that their data are safe when they see the word privacy policy but it would be safer for the consumers to not completely rely on a mere word and to be dilegent of protecting their information.
2. People believe that privacy laws protect all their online transactions when, in fact, there is no uniform consumer privacy law. Although there is a patchwork of laws that protect certain information such as personal financial data, no baseline of fair information practices exist to apply across the board.
