News Report on Wartime Atrocity Even More Powerful for Its Brevity

KHAWHEABAD, AFGHANISTAN—A 300-word article describing a nighttime attack on civilians that was carried out using white phosphorous charges and bayonets was given additional impact and emotional resonance by virtue of its brevity, sources close to the story's reporters confirmed Monday. Use of plain facts, such as the number of civilians killed in the incident, the simple mention of the extremely high temperature at which white phosphorous burns and of its tendency to adhere to human flesh, and the stark observation that most of the survivors were orphaned children under 14 years of age, lent the piece an almost unendurable weight. Furthermore, sources confirmed that the article's brief description of an elderly woman cradling an infant was made more powerful by its terseness, allowing readers to fill in the missing details with their own vivid imaginations. At press time, it was not known whether a similarly emotionally desolate and devastating follow-up feature would eventually run.

Jesus was in the human flesh.......He could have failed! His prayer in the garden "God take this cup from me" 'If it is Your will" . He didn't want to go thru what had to be done but he Chose to save us all. It's called Salvation, it's free and it was done for me! What a gift!
40 days and 40 nights in the wilderness with satan at his heels trying to tempt him......
He was a man but he was also without sin as man knows it.

While the media was told this by Palestinians & it spread like wildfire, post war it was shown FALSE.

In fact, the only phosphorus used was LEGALLY to illuminate tunnels & ambuses in COMBAT areas. Israel took a pause in the war to let civilians evacuate before going to ground operations.

The air operations could & did pinpoint weapons targets, avoiding civilian casualties. The ground operations required time for civilians to leave because HAMAS placed itself in people's homes, & their tunnels were under people's businesses.

The so-called burn victims in hospitals were never independently verified!! Non-Palestinians supports observed that a lot of it was plain mistatement. The press wanted "news" & had a field day with it, was all.

Hamas did include white phosphorus in it's missiles into Israeli civilian area!! So any article or NGO that doesn't mention that -- is showing it is an unreliable source. Unfortunately many used Palestinians heresay & observers who'd been working with them for years & weren't neutral, instead of following up with good resources.

Israel's big complaint with the evaluations is that military experts of any kind were not involved, so there wasn't quality judgement on how & when things were [...]

For your education, as distasteful as the Afganistan enterprise is, the NATO forces are not deliberately, yes deliberately shooting at schools using white phosphorous, deliberately shooting civilians holding a white flag, locking the gates on Gaza and refusing the civilians an escape route while directly bombing them, ad infinitum. And NATO does not provide their forces with religious who write books entitled "The Complete Guide to Killing Afgans" vs Rabbi Yitzhak Shapiro's "The Complete Guide to Killing Non-Jews", a book popular among the IDF.

I don't think they give enough press time to Paul Menard. He is having a great year so far. He has vastly improved from his previous years in the Sprint Cup. He is not having a bad year in the Nationwide series either.

    Diane--

I think the issue is that by admittedly selecting "examples" and playing to your own "strengths in terms of the technologies and approaches we know well", the report becomes excessively exclusionary, which is fine when published by Patrick Meier and Diane Coyle. But when you slap a UN and Vodaphone label on the report, it becomes influential by a factor of 10 (no offense to your credentials both personally), and the omissions can affect others negatively in ways you never intended.

Sanjana's suggestions - to include references and bibliographies to similar projects not highlighted in the report, would have alleviated many of the issues several have taken up with you on this report. (No one was suggesting an academic/literature review). And certainly having a better understanding of the selection criteria and explanation that the report was not intended to be comprehensive in its coverage documented within the report would have been helpful.

As you and Patrick are experts in this field, many, including myself, would have expected that you could have done a bit more research and outreach to see if there were other projects and initiatives worth mentioning, even if briefly. This would not have added that much [...]

It's both. Evolution, by definition, is the change in gene frequencies within a population over time. That is a fact, it is observable and measurable. The theory of evolution by natural selection explains why this happens. Theories do not interpret facts they explain facts and they must do so accurately,
It's not dogmatic to say evolution is a fact (if using "fact" in the colloquial sense) because the sheer overwhelming amount of evidence confirms that it most definitely is true. Certainty here is completely justified.
We get pissed off with evolution's detractors because they are not honest sceptics. It's not a case of they genuinely doubt evolution because they believe they must have some evidence against it. It is that they are doctrinally (by their religious beliefs) forbidden from ever accepting that evolution is true and they come up with this pseudo-scientific nonsense in an attempt to discredit it and they keep coming back with the same crap year after year, decade after decade. You see it's liars we have a problem with. It's perfectly OK to be honestly mistaken, anyone can be wrong, but when you have been informed that your objection to evolution is wrong and had it [...]
